*I'm posting the same review for the companion pice, the TFC-1000S10D5*We are using this to get video from a leased access studio to a cable headend. The channel used MPEG over IP using cable modems to get their channel to the headend, but had problems with the signal dropping out from time to time. It was decided to move them over to a dedicated fiber. This (and the companion TFC-1000S10D3) offered a single fiber solution, since it is able to transmit on 1550nm and receive on 1310nm. Make sure when you order you get the right devices. There's very little documentation that comes with the unit, and they don't offer much in the way of diagnostic functions. There are 2 LEDs, POWER and LINK on the front of the unit. The power LED obviously comes on when you apply power, but the link LED doesn't come on until you have a proper Ethernet device attached. There's no indicator that the unit is seeing light from the other unit at all. However there is a dip switch setting that will drop the link LED if there's no light received. But again, if you don't have anything connected to the Ethernet port the link LED will never come on. The link also expects one side to be MDI and the other to be MDIx. In other words, if you are connecting a remote device to a switch you will use all straight Ethernet cables, but connecting 2 switches or 2 devices together will require a crossover cable. The units we bought are designed for up to a 10KM link. We running it over a 1.6KM link. The spec sheet states it outputs -9dBm and wants to work between -7(?) and -22dBm, so I thought I might have to pad down the light. But I measured a -13dBm on the 1310 transmitter, so I left off the pad. The -13dBm light reading was taken with a fairly new JDSU light meter, so if you're going to be close to 10KM on your link you might consider going with the higher powered versions.Once you get everything cabled together it works like a champ. We haven't measured raw throughput, but we haven't seen any issues with the channel since moving to this solution, for a little over a week.
