Manila is the strongest and most popular natural-fiber rope and has the best grip in your hands. Natural Manila rope is a very low stretch rope and holds knots really well. It is sometimes referred to as hemp rope but it is not actual hemp (cannabis). It is made in the Philippines from the fibers of the abacá plant which is a close relative of the common banana plant. The fibers are stripped from the leaves of the abacá plant and twisted into yarns. All Manila rope fibers are treated with a light mineral oil during manufacturing to prevent them from becoming brittle. Some people don't like the smell of Manila rope, especially when it is brand new, but the odor will fade over time.Manila rope is suitable for indoor or outdoor use, although it does mildew and rot over time with exposure to moisture unless properly dried. Since Manila rope is made from a natural plant fiber it does shrink around 10-15% in length and expands in diameter when it gets wet. These natural plant fiber ropes tend to run a little larger in diameter than you might expect. For example, a 2 inch diameter Manila rope measures approximately 2 ⅛ inches. Our 3 strand twisted Manila rope is grade 1 and meets or exceeds the Cordage Institute Specifications for Manila rope.
